Il Gran Premio degli Stati Uniti 1986, disputato il 22 giugno sul Circuito di Detroit, è stata la settima gara del campionato di Formula 1 del 1986. Il Gran Premio è stato vinto da Ayrton Senna su Lotus-Renault. A Detroit la Benetton si presenta con una novità: gli pneumatici Pirelli mostrano le spalle colorate, in completa sintonia con il motto ‘United Colors’. Rosso, arancio, verde, blu, giallo e viola: il ritorno mediatico è di primissimo piano, la Benetton ha fatto centro. Circa trent’anni dopo la scelta verrà ripresa dalla Federazione: colorare gli pneumatici per consentire al pubblico di riconoscere immediatamente la mescola delle gomme montate dalle scuderie. L’appuntamento americano non si rivelò fortunato per i due piloti del team italiano. In qualifica Gerhard Berger scattò in sesta fila, con il dodicesimo tempo, staccato di 3.5 secondi dal poleman Ayrton Senna. Ancor più attardato Teo Fabi, diciassettesimo in nona fila, a oltre 5 secondi dal miglior tempo. In gara un mesto ritiro per entrambi: l’austriaco alzò bandiera bianca dopo 8 giri per un problema al motore BMW, l’italiano dopo 38 tornate per un guasto al cambio.

The 1986 United States Grand Prix, held on June 22 at the Detroit Circuit, was the seventh race of the 1986 Formula 1 Championship. The Grand Prix was won by Ayrton Senna in a Lotus-Renault car. In Detroit, Benetton presented itself with a novelty: the Pirelli tyres showed colored shoulders, in complete harmony with the motto 'United Colors'. Red, orange, green, blue, yellow and purple: the media backlash is top notch, Benetton has hit the mark. Some thirty years later, the choice would be taken up by the Federation: color the tires so that the public could immediately recognize the compound of the tires fitted by the racing teams. The American appointment did not prove lucky for the two drivers of the Italian team. In qualifying, Gerhard Berger started on the sixth row, with the twelfth time, 3.5 seconds behind poleman Ayrton Senna. Even more delayed was Teo Fabi, seventeenth on the ninth row, more than 5 seconds off the fastest time.
